I have a love for maps, especially vintage ones with beautiful colors.
When I was young my family traveled across the US every year and my favorite thing to do was to follow along with the map.
The “map spine” was first sewn together and then collaged and integrated into the painting.

About Mary James

Mary James | Artist Statement 2021

Intuition drives my work and aspects related to nature. It is the subconscious mind that influences my shapes and line work.


Intimate brush strokes play with thin transparent layers that add to the depth of the painting. Then necessary subtractions form the spontaneous energy that connects with the viewer.


Every new painting is an opportunity to meet a challenge and to learn anew. That is what motivates me. Non-representational abstractions give freedom to the creative spirit without restrictions. The painting is complete when the conversation between the artist and canvas is complete.
